After carving her way through the indie-folk scene of Sydney, where her Triple-J-played band Achoo! Bless You shared stages with musicians such as Tim Rodgers (You Am I), Passenger (UK) and Slow Club (UK), Ash Steel has escaped to the desert, solo. Drawing inspiration from her new home in Alice Springs and its potential to inspire, challenge, surprise and isolate, Ash is a tale-teller, truth-sayer and rhyme-maker, whose “more than just a gal with a guitar” steeze is often compared to the Aussie sass of Courtney Barnett and folk musings of Joni Mitchell. She spins folky ditties of golden love, awkward love, Summer love, expired love, almost love, desert love, love in a parallel universe, love of Paul Kelly and finding love under the couch where you were sitting the whole time, pairing clever lyrics with emotive guitar work.
When she’s not writing and performing her own shows, Ash is known to pop into the various open mic nights of Alice Springs and play in the backing band for the Alice Sings Pop Choir with local musicians Edward Gould and Dave Crowe. Her latest single ‘One of My Jokes’ has received airplay on Sydney’s FBi Radio and is currently enjoying rotation on Triple J Unearthed radio. She is set to release her debut solo record in 2017, written and recorded here in Alice Springs.
