Wide Open Space to return April 30 – May 2, 2021.
Based on the recommendations of the Australian Government and health authorities regarding non-essential, organised gatherings of more than 500 people, it has been decided that Wide Open Space 2020 will be rescheduled for May 2021.
This decision has not been taken lightly. The WOS team has a duty of care for our crew, audience and the broader Central Australian community which we take very seriously. We understand that if we were to proceed with the event, we could be exposing many people to potential infection and this would put undue pressure on the already limited health resources available in the region. WOS brings people together from around the country and across Central Australian communities and we must take this into consideration as part of our duty of care.
We know that the rescheduling of WOS has repercussions for many local artists, staff, suppliers, contractors and businesses. It also has repercussions for all interstate and international artists and attendees that have booked travel and scheduled time off work to attend. The festival also has a significant impact on the local economy, particularly for local businesses and the tourism industry. In 2017, visitors of WOS contributed around $450k per annum to the local economy according to the NT Government. Furthermore, WOS festival directly invested over $300k per annum alone into the local economy. With the return of the festival in 2020, we were anticipating our biggest event to date with the prospect of having an even larger economic impact on Central Australia.
Like everyone, we were looking forward to our 11th edition, especially after a year off in 2019. We are disappointed but, due to circumstances beyond our control, this is the best decision we can make at this time.
Although we are currently determining exactly what this change will mean for the future of WOS, our sincere hope is to return in 2021 – bigger and better! We are in discussions with artists about their attendance for WOS 2021 and hope many of our existing ticket holders will commit to being there too.
Stay safe everyone.
